There are a number of options to consider when setting up practice in Sault Ste. Marie. Aside from the offices located in the Group Health Centre, there are several other doctors’ buildings located around the community that also have quick access to diagnostic tests and services.
In March 2011, the Sault consolidated hospital-based services into a single, state-of-the-art medical resource and referral centre. The New Sault Area Hospital offers a welcoming environment with plenty of natural light, three beautifully groomed courtyards and a spectacular view of a true Northern Ontario landscape. This new facility is filled with the latest technology and equipment. A total of $35 million has been invested in new equipment.
One of the main employers in the Sault is Essar Steel Algoma Inc. followed by Sault Area Hospital, St. Mary's Paper, Flakeboard Company Limited, Algoma Central Railway, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and the Group Health Centre. The Algoma and Huron-Superior District school boards are also located here as are Algoma University and Sault College. In addition, many federal and provincial government offices are located here including Natural Resources, Ontario Forest Research Institute and the Great Lakes Forestry Centre. The Sault is also home to several call centres including Transcom and Cross Country Automotive Services.
