Sault Ste. Marie is a beautiful northern urban centre located on the St. Mary’s River between Lake Huron and Lake Superior on the U.S. border.
The community is the home of the Sault Area Hospital, a 291 bed hospital serving a population of 75,000 and a catchment area of 120,000. Construction of a new hospital for the community is now underway with plans for completion in 2011.
Opportunities in the community for both solo practice, or group practice with Algoma District Medical Group at the Group Health Centre or SaultCare Medical clinic.
Practice supports:
- 6-bed ICU, 9-bed medical step-down, 4-bed surgical step-down and 8 telemetry beds
- Sub-specialty internal medicine backup, including respirology, gastroenterology, cardiology and endocrinology.
- Comprehensive Oncology and Nephrology Programs
- Full support by all surgical specialties except cardiac & neurosurgery

Locum positions qualify for funding support from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Underserviced Area Program, including daily honourarium and stipend plus payment for travel and accommodation and additional on-call stipend.
Full-time positions are eligible for MOHLTC/UAP grants and a very competitive community incentive.
Teaching opportunities: Affiliation with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) provides the opportunity to teach residents and medical students.
