Hospitalist Program
Sault Area Hospital
- 291 bed facility hosting a range of medical services including cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, respiratory, oncology, and nephrology. Availability of surgical services includes general surgery, vascular surgery, urology, ophthalmology, gynaecology, and orthopaedic, plastic and thoracic surgery (limited). Neither cardiac, nor neurosurgeries are done in the community. Physicians with a special interest in rheumatology and neurology are available and two pathologists are on staff. Diagnostic and interventional radiology services are available with on-site CT and MR imaging capability.
- The SAH hospitalist program provides aggressive primary care services to unaffiliated patients within the hospital setting.
- 4.5 Full-time MD’s and 2 dedicated Nurse Practitioners currently support the hospitalist program. The program is looking to increase its compliment of full-time physicians to reach a target of 6.5 in the upcoming year. The program is also seeking to hire an additional NP in the upcoming year.
- The SAH hospitalist program follows a team-based model that strives for high quality and efficient inpatient care. The mainstay of hospitalist care involves evaluating and treating acute adult illnesses. The NP Hospitalist program supports patients who are receiving care on rehabilitation, complex care and community re-integration floors. Consultative and supportive services are provided to other units in the hospital on an as-needed basis.
- Hospitalists do not routinely care for adults and children who are seriously ill and are deemed to require the services of an Intensivist-specialist physician.
- Consultative support is provided by general and subspecialty internal medicine, general and subspecialty surgery, anaesthesia, paediatrics, neonatology, obstetrics and psychiatry.

Teaching opportunities: Affiliation with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) provides the opportunity to teach residents and medical students.
