  • Sault Area Hospital has five operating theaters between two sites.
  • Paediatric surgery -- ENT, general dental, plastic surgery, and occasional neonates.
  • Some plastic surgery and all eye surgeries are done under local anaesthesia at the Plummer Site -- all other surgery is done at the General Site.
  • Surgical services include everything but neurosurgery and open heart surgery.
  • Epidural service – approximately 25% of obstetric patients receive an epidural.
  • Anaesthetic Group is responsible for ventilatory care of medical and surgical patients in our Intensive Care Unit.
  • All gas machines are Ohmeda Modulus II machines with Hewlett Packard cardiac monitor and Dinamapp NIBP machines – 2 have Datex Omeda Monitors.
  • Sevoflurane is on all gas machines.
  • The new Holding Unit is a bright spacious area where patients waiting for surgery are interviewed, examined, have I.V. and other lines started and blocks inserted.
  • Acute pain service includes PCA pumps and an epidural service.
  • In the Pre-screen Clinic pre-op patients are seen by an RN and prepared for surgery with appropriate teaching instruction, lab work, etc. The anaesthetists see a limited number of the sicker patients in the Pre-screen Clinic, as well as patients having major surgery. Ninety percent (90%) of our surgery is done on an outpatient basis, or as a same day admission.
